SawStop Just Made the Bandsaw Nobody Else Could

SawStop just announced their 14” Professional Bandsaw.

The company that made table saws stop eating fingers has pointed the same technology to the bandsaw. Here's the pitch, straight from SawStop:

"SawStop's Sensic™ Active Safety system closely monitors the blade during use for contact with a finger or any conductive material. Should that happen, the system triggers the safety brake and cuts and captures the blade, releasing tension from the blade and stopping it in less than 5 milliseconds. No other bandsaw can do that."

Like they said no other bandsaw can do that. No caveats. Just the claim.

A blink takes 100 to 400 milliseconds. Sensic™ detects contact, cuts the blade, captures it, and releases the tension before your eyelid finishes closing.

Focus on the verbs: cuts and captures. Passive shutoffs let a spinning blade coast to a stop on momentum. This mechanism actively severs the loop, traps the blade, and kills the tension instantly.

Worth being clear about, because it's going to get confused: this saw has two brakes. The electronic brake is your everyday stop — hit the paddle, blade stops in under two seconds. The Sensic safety brake is the emergency system at five milliseconds. Two seconds is routine. Five milliseconds is the safety spec.

The easy version of this product is a safe machine that's mediocre at everything else. That's not what happened.

14 inches of resaw — best in class. The reinforced steel frame delivers up to 14" of resaw capacity, the most among bandsaws with 14" wheels. That's the number that decides whether you can book-match wide panels and cut your own veneer, or work around it in two passes.

Two motor options. A 1.75 HP / 120V that runs on a standard circuit, or a 3 HP / 230V for heavier work. No rewiring a wall unless you want to.

Large cast-iron table. 16.9″ x 21.8″, tilting 45° right and 9° left. That left tilt is rare in this class.

A fence that handles drift. The 5.5″ HDPE face configures high or low, mounts on either side of the blade, and adjusts fore and aft. It also has integrated adjustment to compensate for blade drift — replacing the usual routine of scribing a line and skewing the fence by hand.

1. Fast blade changes. A removable insert plate and tilting fence beam open up real access.
2. Tool-free blade guides. Eccentric ball-bearing guides adjust by hand, no wrench.
3. Built-in task lighting. Kills the shadow on the cutline.
4. Serious dust collection. Captured directly beneath the table, with two 4″ ports and custom-fitted shrouds.

Does the brake destroy the blade? TBD — the system cuts the blade as part of the stop, so plan on a replacement after activation.

What about wet or green wood? TBD 

Does it stop in 5 milliseconds or 2 seconds? Both. Two seconds is the electronic brake for normal shutdown. Five milliseconds is the Sensic safety brake on skin contact.

How is this different from the table saw brake? The table saw brake drops the blade below the table. A bandsaw blade is a loop under tension, so Sensic cuts the loop, captures it, and releases the tension.

Which motor should I get? 1.75 HP / 120V for most garage and hobby shops. 3 HP / 230V for production work and heavy resawing.
