Faster Grounding: The Milwaukee SDS Max Side Load Ground Rod Driver

The Problem: Traditional ground rod drivers are "cup" shaped. This requires you to lift the rotary hammer over the very top of the rod. If you are starting a 10 foot rod, you are either standing on a ladder or truck bed, trying to balance a 20 lb tool while keeping the rod straight.

The Milwaukee Solution: The new 49-62--4070 features a specialized side opening. This allows you to do the following:

  1. Start at Chest Height: Slide the driver onto the rod from the side while keeping your feet firmly on the ground.
  2. Ditch the Ladder: You can drive the rod from 10 feet down to roughly 4 feet without ever climbing.
  3. Finish Strong: Once the rod is low enough, you can transition back to a standard cup driver or use the internal cup from the side loader to finish the drive.

Choosing the right tool for ground rod driving depends heavily on the ground conditions you're facing. The SDS MAX Side Load Driver (48-62-4070) paired with the MXF365 is the ideal solution for soft, loose, or firm mixed soils with moderate compaction. However, if you are dealing with dense and hard terrain such as rocky earth or significant clay you’ll want to step up to the 1-1/8" HEX Ground Rod Driver (48-62-4047) and the MXF368 breaker to ensure you have the necessary impact energy to reach full depth.

Key Specs for the Job Site

  1. Compatibility: Works with all SDS Max Rotary hammers (best paired with MX FUEL breaker or 2" SDS Max Hammers)
  2. Capacity: Designed for standard 5/8" and 3/4" ground rods.
  3. Durability: Forged from high grade steel to withstand the high impact energy of demolition hammers.

Why it Matters: For any crew doing high-volume residential service upgrades or commercial grounding, this isn't just about convenience it's about safety and speed. Reducing overhead strain and eliminating ladder falls keeps the team on the job and moves the project along faster.

If you're still doing it the old way, your shoulders (and your safety coordinator) will thank you for the switch.
