Phase 5: The Stove & Vents

Tools Needed: 3-Inch Hole Saw Attachment, Drill, Tin Snips
Materials Needed:
* Wood-fired sauna stove
* Igneous sauna rocks
* Concrete pavers (for the floor pad)
* Cement backer board sheets
* Non-combustible wall spacers (to create the backer board air gap)
* Insulated triple-wall chimney pipe
* Metal ceiling support box/roof thimble
* Rubber/metal roof flashing boot
* High-temperature outdoor silicone sealant
* 2 Vent covers/grates
Step-by-Step Instructions
Drill the Vents: Attach a 3-inch hole saw to your drill. Drill one intake hole through the cedar wall close to the floor right behind where the stove will sit. Drill an exhaust hole high up on the opposite wall.
Install the Stove Protection: Set down concrete pavers on the floor where the stove will go. Mount cement backer board to the walls directly behind it, leaving a 1-inch air gap between the backer board and the cedar wall using non-combustible spacers to safely block heat radiation.
The Chimney: Cut a hole through your ceiling and plywood roof. Install a dedicated metal ceiling support box (thimble) so your hot chimney pipe never physically touches raw wood. Run your insulated triple-wall chimney pipe from the stove straight up through the roof thimble.
Seal the Roof: Use tin snips to cut and shape the rubber/metal flashing on the roof around the pipe, and seal the flashing with outdoor silicone to prevent rain leaks.
Ready for Fire: Load up your igneous sauna rocks on top of the stove, hang your outward-swinging door using a non-locking roller catch, and you are ready for your first fire!
