How to Use a Level: Super Simple Guide
If you’re reading this and have no idea what a level is, how to read one, or why that tiny bubble matters, don’t worry, we’ve got you. A level is a simple tool that helps you make sure shelves, pictures, TVs, cabinets, and other projects are straight instead of crooked.
Step 1: Find the Bubble
Most levels have small tubes filled with liquid. Inside each tube is a bubble.
That bubble tells you whether the item you are checking is straight.
Step 2: Use the Right Bubble Window
A basic level usually has more than one bubble window.
Use the horizontal bubble when checking something that runs left to right, like a shelf, picture frame, TV mount, or countertop.
Use the vertical bubble when checking something that runs up and down, like a post, bracket, door frame, or side of a cabinet.
Step 3: Place the Level on the Item
Set the level flat against the surface you want to check.
For example:
- Place it on top of a shelf or picture frame
- Hold it against the side of a post or bracket
- Rest it along the top of a TV mount or cabinet
Make sure the level is sitting firmly against the surface and not tilted in your hand.
Step 4: Look at the Bubble
Inside the bubble window, you will see two lines.
Your goal is simple:
Get the bubble between the two lines.
If the bubble is centered, the item is level or straight.
If the bubble is off to one side, the item needs to be adjusted.
Step 5: Adjust the Item
Move one side up, down, left, or right until the bubble is centered between the two lines.
Make small adjustments and check the bubble again.
Step 6: Mark or Secure the Item
Once the bubble is centered, you can mark the location, tighten the screws, hang the item, or secure it in place.
Before fully tightening everything, check the level one more time to make sure nothing shifted.

Bubble in the middle = straight.
Bubble off to one side = adjust it.
