Why Changing Your Home Air Filter Matters

It is not the most exciting home project. Nobody is inviting their friends over to admire a brand-new furnace filter. However, it may be one of the easiest ways to help your HVAC system perform properly.

A dirty filter is like putting a weighted blanket over your vents. Your system has to work overtime, burns more energy, and basically gets gunked up from the inside out. Swap in a clean filter to maintain airflow while collecting dust and other airborne particles before they travel through your home.

Acme Tools carries a number of great filters. But not everyone is right for your home. Before ordering, check the three dimensions printed out on your existing filter and choose the exact same size.

1. 3M Filtrete furnace filters in several household sizes, including 16 x 25 x 1, 20 x 20 x 1 and 20 x 25 x 1.
2. MERV 11, MERV 12 and MERV 13 options for different filtration needs.
3. BestAir furnace filters, including thicker 16 x 25 x 5-inch filters for compatible systems.
4. A basic tape measure if the old filter’s dimensions are unreadable.
5. A small flashlight for filters located in dark utility rooms or behind hard-to-see access panels.

ENERGY STAR recommends checking the filter every month, especially during the winter and summer. Replace it whenever it looks dirty and at least once every three months.

Your schedule may vary depending on the filter, your HVAC system and conditions inside your home. Always follow the filter and equipment manufacturers’ recommendations.

This should only take a few minutes.

1. Turn off the system. Switch off your heating or cooling system at the thermostat.
2. Locate the filter. It is usually inside a return-air grille or near the furnace or air handler.
3. Check the size. The dimensions are normally printed along the edge of the old filter. Buy the same size and use a filtration rating your system can accommodate.
4. Remove the old filter. Before pulling it out, look at the direction of the airflow arrow printed on its frame.
5. Install the new filter. Slide it into place with the arrow pointing toward the furnace or air handler, not back toward the room.
6. Close everything and restart the system. Write the installation date on the filter or set a reminder on your phone for next month.

The EPA recommends using the highest-rated filter your HVAC system’s fan and filter slot can handle. If you are unsure which MERV rating to choose, check the system manual or ask an HVAC professional.
