How to Build a Simple Dorm Bedside Shelf

Dorm rooms never have space. Once the bed, desk and mini fridge move in, you’re fighting for any sort of extra space with your roommate.

This simple clamp-on bedside shelf gives you a spot for your phone, glasses and water bottle. It also attaches without drilling into the bed or wall, which should help keep the resident assistant and security-deposit department happy.

Before starting, check your dorm’s rules and make sure the bed has a flat rail where clamps can attach securely.

Materials

1. One 14-inch piece of 1x8 lumber
2. One 14-inch piece of 1x6 lumber
3. Two small metal L-brackets
4. Screws recommended for the brackets
5. Wood glue
6. Two 2-inch C-clamps
7. Felt or rubber pads
8. Paint or stain, if desired

The 1x8 becomes the shelf. The 1x6 sits vertically against the bed rail and provides a place for the clamps.

If you don’t own a saw, have the lumber cut when you buy it. There is no need to purchase another power tool just to make two straight cuts.

Measure the open space beside the mattress and the thickness of the bed rail.

A 14-inch shelf should work for many dorm beds, but measure yours before cutting. Make sure the C-clamps can open wide enough to fit around the mounting board and bed rail together.

Sand the faces, edges and corners of both boards.

You don’t need to make them furniture-store perfect. You just want to remove rough spots before one finds your hand at 2 a.m.

Stand the 1x6 board vertically and place the 1x8 shelf along its top edge to form an L shape.

Apply a small amount of wood glue where the boards meet. Install one L-bracket near each end underneath the shelf. Drill small pilot holes, then drive the screws carefully.

Use screws that will not pass through the boards.

Use the QUICK-GRIP clamps to hold the pieces together while the glue dries. Follow the drying time listed on the glue.

Once dry, paint or stain the shelf if you want. Leaving it unfinished also works perfectly fine. It’s a dorm shelf, not a family heirloom.

Place felt or rubber pads between the mounting board and bed rail. This helps protect the bed and gives the shelf additional grip.

Use one C-clamp near each end to secure the mounting board to the rail. Tighten them until the shelf feels stable, but do not crank them down hard enough to damage the furniture.

Test the shelf gently before placing anything on it.

This shelf is intended for small items such as:

Do not sit on it, lean against it or load it with a microwave. If the shelf moves, tilts or loosens, remove everything and reposition the clamps.

In one afternoon, you’ll have a useful dorm bedside shelf without sacrificing floor space or putting holes in anything the college expects to get back.
