1. Installing Heat-Shrink Tubing

Heat-shrink tubing is commonly used to cover and protect electrical connections. When heated, the tubing contracts around wires, terminals and splices to create a cleaner and more secure finished connection.

Common applications include:

  1. Automotive wiring
  2. Trailer-light connections
  3. Marine wiring
  4. Appliance repairs
  5. Battery cables
  6. Electronics projects

The adjustable temperature helps users shrink the tubing gradually without scorching, splitting or overheating it. Cordless operation is especially useful when working underneath dashboards, inside equipment or around trailers.

2. Removing Stickers, Decals and Adhesive

Heat can soften the adhesive underneath stickers, labels and vinyl graphics, making them easier to remove.

The heat gun can help remove:

  1. Vehicle decals
  2. Bumper stickers
  3. Equipment labels
  4. Vinyl lettering
  5. Tape residue
  6. Price tags

Begin at a low temperature and keep the nozzle moving. Too much heat can damage paint, plastic and other finished surfaces, so test an inconspicuous area first.

3. Stripping Paint and Varnish

A heat gun can soften old paint or varnish before it is removed with a scraper. This can reduce the amount of aggressive sanding or chemical stripper needed during refinishing projects.

It may be useful when working on:

  1. Doors
  2. Window frames
  3. Cabinets
  4. Furniture
  5. Trim
  6. Railings

Work in small sections and avoid holding the heat in one place. Before heating older paint, confirm that it does not contain lead and follow appropriate lead-safe procedures.

4. Bending and Forming Plastic

Controlled heat can make certain thermoplastics flexible enough to bend or reshape. This is useful when routing plastic material around an obstacle or creating a custom part.

Potential applications include:

  1. Bending plastic pipe
  2. Forming plastic conduit
  3. Shaping acrylic sheets
  4. Adjusting plastic trim
  5. Correcting minor warping

Different plastics react differently to heat. Start with a lower setting, warm the material evenly and follow the manufacturer’s recommended temperature.

5. Shrink-Wrapping Products

A heat gun activates shrink film, causing it to tighten around the object underneath. This can help protect, bundle or organize products and materials.

Shrink wrapping can be used for:

  1. Protecting packaged products
  2. Bundling small parts
  3. Wrapping gift baskets
  4. Organizing stored materials
  5. Protecting equipment components
  6. Sealing items against dust and moisture

Use steady movement and controlled airflow to tighten the film evenly without melting through it.

1. Metabo HPT 36V/18V MultiVolt Battery and Charger Kit

Because the heat gun is sold as a bare tool, a battery and charger kit is the most important companion purchase. The included MultiVolt battery provides 8.0Ah of capacity in compatible 18V tools and can also power Metabo HPT 36V equipment.

2. Metabo HPT 18V MultiVolt Oscillating Multi-Tool

These tools make a natural removal team. The heat gun can soften old caulk, paint, and adhesive, while the oscillating tool, equipped with the appropriate scraper blade, helps remove the loosened material. Its tool-free blade-change system makes switching between scraping, cutting and sanding accessories quick and convenient.

3. Metabo HPT 18V MultiVolt 1.6-Gallon Wet/Dry HEPA Vacuum

A compact vacuum makes cleanup easier after stripping paint, removing flooring adhesive or scraping away old caulk. This model delivers more than 74 CFM of airflow, includes HEPA filtration and accepts both Metabo HPT 18V and MultiVolt batteries.

I don’t personally use it all that often if I’m being honest. But my father absolutely loves it! He is always looking in my box for it, finds it really helpful for his graphic business. He is a DEWALT guy himself but he finds the screen on the Metabo is perfect so he can dial in his temperatures. I’d imagine the way he is using the gun it’s a bit more complicated than “Heat Tube-Bend Tube”. So having that extra reassurance visually is an incredible feature.
