Milwaukee sells a 366-piece master mechanics set, and it’s a monster. If I were opening a full-time shop, I’d gladly take one.
But if I were building a simpler Milwaukee mechanics tool set for my garage, I wouldn’t start by buying everything Milwaukee has ever painted red. I’d focus on the tools I would actually reach for during brake jobs, tire rotations, oil changes and weekend repairs.
No filler. No mystery tools that sit untouched for eight years. Here’s my setup.
Milwaukee 3/8-Inch Drive 56-Piece Ratchet and Socket Set
Every mechanic's set needs a solid foundation, and I’d start with the Milwaukee 56-Piece SAE and Metric Ratchet and Socket Set.
It includes standard and deep sockets, extensions, a universal swivel and a 90-tooth ratchet with a 4-degree arc swing. The sockets also have four flat sides, meaning the 10 mm has one less excuse to roll beneath the workbench and disappear forever.
These are standard chrome sockets for hand-tool use. I would not put them on an impact wrench.
Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1/2-Inch Mid-Torque Impact Wrench Kit
For lug nuts, larger bolts and stubborn suspension hardware, I’d add the Milwaukee M18 FUEL 1/2-Inch Mid-Torque Impact Wrench Kit.
The mid-torque gives me serious removal power without the size and weight of a massive high-torque impact. Its four-mode control includes Auto Shut-Off and Bolt Removal Control, which helps keep freshly loosened hardware from launching across the garage.
This kit also includes two M18 XC5.0 Resistant batteries, a charger and a carrying case.
Milwaukee 31-Piece SHOCKWAVE Impact Socket Set
An impact wrench needs impact-rated sockets. That part is not optional.
The Milwaukee 31-Piece 1/2-Inch Drive SHOCKWAVE Impact Socket Set covers SAE and metric sizes from 3/8 to 1-1/2 inches and 10 to 24 mm. The sockets are deep, six-point and made from forged impact steel.
They also come inside a PACKOUT organizer, so I can stop storing loose impact sockets in the same drawer as six pens that no longer work.
Milwaukee 30-Piece SAE and Metric Combination Wrench Set
I noticed that sockets cannot reach everything. For brake lines, tight brackets and any bolt that demands two tools at once, I’d want the Milwaukee 30-Piece SAE and Metric Combination Wrench Set.

Once a fastener is loose, I don’t want to spend the next five minutes turning it by hand.

Milwaukee 1/2-Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench
The impact wrench gets lug nuts on quickly. The torque wrench gets them on correctly.
I’d choose the Milwaukee 1/2-Inch Drive Click Torque Wrench, which covers 50 to 250 foot-pounds and has ±3% accuracy. A strong click and breakaway feel tell me when the target setting has been reached.
When a repair manual lists a torque specification, “that feels about right” is not an acceptable substitute.
Milwaukee 10-Piece Pliers and Pick Set
You'll find out quickly that automotive work involves clips, hoses, wires and parts clearly designed by someone who never planned to remove them again.
The Milwaukee 10-Piece Pliers and Pick Set includes long-nose pliers, diagonal cutters, lineman’s pliers, long-reach pliers, combination pliers, four hose picks and a FASTBACK utility knife.
That covers a lot of the annoying little jobs that sockets cannot touch.
Milwaukee 6-Piece Screwdriver Set
I don’t need 47 screwdrivers to get started. I need the common sizes and handles that do not feel terrible after 30 seconds.
The Milwaukee 6-Piece Screwdriver Set includes three Phillips and three slotted drivers. Hardened tips, forged shanks and visible markings keep things simple.
Milwaukee M12 Underbody Light Kit
Working beneath a vehicle is already hard enough when clenching a flashlight between my teeth.
The Milwaukee M12 Underbody Light Kit delivers up to 1,200 lumens and uses a magnetic base with two pivot points for positioning. Its built-in 12-inch magnetic tray can also hold the nuts and bolts I swear I just placed beside me.
The kit includes an M12 XC4.0 battery and charger.
The Milwaukee Mechanics Set I’d Actually Use
This setup covers the jobs I’m most likely to tackle: brakes, wheels, batteries, filters, suspension work, basic engine maintenance and general repairs. It gives me both SAE and metric coverage, cordless speed, impact-rated sockets, proper torque control and enough hand tools to handle the parts that refuse to cooperate.
If I wanted everything stored together, I’d add in the Milwaukee PACKOUT 3-Drawer Tool Box. The pliers tray is designed to fit inside, while the two PACKOUT organizers can connect with the rest of the system.
It may not include every tool a professional shop will eventually need. That’s fine. I’d rather start with a practical Milwaukee mechanics tool set I’ll use than spend money filling drawers just to impress people.
