Listen, there is absolutely nothing worse than trying to muscle through a job with a dull blade. It’s embarrassing, it’s dangerous, and quite frankly, it’s a waste of your valuable time. If you call yourself a pro, your tools need to cut like lasers. That is where the Tormek T-8 Water Cooled Sharpening System comes in. We just cracked the box open on this beast, and let me tell you, it is the upgrade your workshop has been begging for.

Getting The Beast Ready To Eat
Setting this thing up isn’t rocket science, but you need to pay attention so you don’t wreck your new toy before you even start. First off, get that sharpening wheel on the left side. It’s a reverse thread; turn it clockwise to remove it. Don’t be that guy who strips the threads because he didn’t read the manual. The T-8 uses an easy-lock system, so once you start spinning it, it torques down. It basically does the heavy lifting for you.
The system comes with a solid stash of accessories, including the centering knife jig, which is worth its weight in gold for getting that perfect bevel. But don't think this is just for your kitchen knives. Grab extra jigs for axe blades, chisels, and pretty much anything else with an edge.
This machine is built to handle whatever you throw at it.
Prepping The Leather Honing Wheel
Before you start grinding sparks, you must prep the leather honing wheel. This is the finishing touch that takes your edge from "sharp" to "scary sharp." You’re going to saturate that leather with the included oil, use about two-thirds of the tube. Turn the machine on and work it in, but for the love of everything holy, make sure the wheel is spinning away from you. We are trying to sharpen tools here, not send you to the ER. Once it’s oiled, apply a thin string of honing compound and work that in too.
The Stone Is Thirsty
Here is the thing about water-cooled systems: that grinding stone is basically a sponge when it’s brand new. You’re going to fill the water trough to the max level, and then watch that water disappear as the stone drinks it up. You will probably have to top it off a couple of times until it stops absorbing. Keep the trough adjusted to the top stop for maximum saturation. A wet stone keeps your steel cool, meaning you won’t ruin the temper of your expensive blades.
Dialing In The Perfect Angle
The real game-changer here is the precision. The T-8 comes with an angle master tool that lets you measure the existing bevel on your blade; ours was sitting pretty at 35 degrees. You set the universal support bar to match that angle perfectly. No more guessing, no more eyeballing it, and no more ruining your edge. You lock it in, check your contact points, and you are ready to grind.
