No, This GEARWRENCH Tool Is Not a Drill

No, this is not a drill. It’s a tire inflator.

Full disclosure, the pistol-grip design had me fooled for half a second. Add the orange housing and 20V battery hanging from the bottom, and the GEARWRENCH 20V Rechargeable 160 PSI Tire Inflator looks like it should be driving screws.

Instead, it puts air in tires. Honestly, that might make it even more useful.

Set the Pressure and Let It Work

The preset pressure mode stands out as a great feature. Select the pressure you need, start the inflator and it automatically stops once that number is reached.

That means you don’t have to crouch beside the tire, repeatedly stop the tool and check the gauge. It should also help reduce the chances of accidentally adding too much air.

GEARWRENCH gives it a maximum pressure of 160 PSI, making it useful for topping off car, truck and RV tires. This isn’t meant to replace a full-size shop compressor, but it could save you from dragging out a hose whenever a customer’s tire is a few pounds low.

Useful Beyond the Garage

The included attachments make this more than an automotive-only tool:

  1. Ball needle for sports equipment
  2. Brass Presta chuck for compatible bicycle tires
  3. Inflator nozzle for other inflatable items
  4. 20-inch air hose for easier access to valve stems

The hose stores directly on the tool, which should help prevent it from becoming tangled with everything else in your toolbox or vehicle.

GEARWRENCH includes a 20V 2.0Ah lithium-ion battery and rates it for up to 20 minutes of continuous runtime. Actual runtime will depend on the job, but that should be enough for several routine pressure adjustments before the battery needs attention.

Who Is This Really For?

I could see this working well in an automotive shop, service truck, garage or roadside emergency kit. It also makes sense for RV owners, cycling families and anyone tired of feeding quarters into a gas-station air machine that may or may not work.

At 3.65 pounds, it is compact enough to carry without feeling like another piece of heavy shop equipment.

The GEARWRENCH GWAIR160 isn’t trying to be an air compressor for every possible job. It is a portable, grab-and-go inflator for the jobs most people actually encounter, and sometimes that is exactly what you need.
