Tool of the Week: JET JWDS-1632 Drum Sander

A new week means a new tool. As we continue through October and celebrate our Trade of the Month, Woodworking, it’s time to talk about everyone’s favorite part of building something: sanding.

Okay, “favorite” might be pushing it.

Sanding a large tabletop, cabinet panel or cutting board by hand can take forever. Even worse, one uneven pass can leave marks that show up as soon as the finish goes on. That is where the JET JWDS-1632 16-32 Drum Sander with Stand comes in.

Less Sanding. More Building.

The JWDS-1632 pulls your workpiece through the machine while its rotating drum sands the surface. Instead of guiding a handheld sander across the same board for an hour, you set the height, select the feed speed and let the machine produce a more consistent result.

Its 1.5 HP motor and variable-speed conveyor are built for furniture parts, shelves, cabinet components, cutting boards, glued-up panels and other projects that need an even surface before finishing. It accepts material up to three inches thick and can handle boards up to 32 inches wide using two passes.

This does not mean you need to throw out your planer or jointer, and it is not meant to remove huge amounts of material in one pass. It is made for controlled sanding, refining surfaces and getting projects closer to the finish line.

Features That Make a Difference

  1. SandSmart technology: Monitors the load on the drum motor and automatically adjusts the conveyor speed to help prevent overloads.
  2. Variable feed speed: Lets you slow things down for more demanding work or increase the rate when the material allows it.
  3. Tool-free parallelism adjustment: The conveyor bed can be repositioned using an exterior dial, with a stop that helps you quickly return it to a flat position.
  4. Adjustable tension rollers: Apply downward pressure to the workpiece to help reduce snipe.
  5. Tool-free abrasive clips: Make changing sandpaper quicker and less frustrating.
  6. Heat-dissipating aluminum drum: Helps protect the workpiece from heat damage during sanding.
  7. Easy height adjustment: One turn of the top-mounted handwheel changes the drum height by 1/16 inch.
  8. Improved dust collection: The mirrored dust hood design helps direct chips and dust away from the workpiece.

Who Is This Drum Sander For?

This machine is a great fit for cabinetmakers, furniture builders, cutting-board makers and home woodworkers who regularly sand wide or repeated pieces.

It is especially useful if sanding has become the slowest step in your shop. You can run several matching components through the machine using the same settings, helping produce consistent results across the entire project.

At 156 pounds with an included stand, this is a stationary shop machine, not something you toss into the truck for a quick repair. Give it a dedicated space, connect proper dust collection and put it to work.

Make Sanding the Easy Part

The JET JWDS-1632 will not remove sanding from woodworking completely. Unfortunately, nobody has invented that machine yet.

What it can do is make sanding larger pieces faster, more consistent and easier to control. If you’re building enough furniture, cabinets or cutting boards to dread the finishing process, this could be the upgrade that gets you back to the enjoyable part of woodworking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can the JET JWDS-1632 be used for?

It is designed for controlled surface sanding and finish preparation. Common projects include tabletops, shelves, cabinet components, cutting boards, furniture parts and glued-up panels.

What size material can it handle?

The sander handles boards up to 16 inches wide in one pass or up to 32 inches wide using two passes. Its maximum material thickness is three inches.

Does a drum sander replace a planer?

No. A planer is made to remove larger amounts of material and establish thickness more quickly. A drum sander removes smaller amounts for surface refinement and finish preparation.

Is the stand included?

Yes. The package includes the JWDS-1632 drum sander and its stand. The assembled machine weighs approximately 156 pounds, so it is intended to remain in a dedicated shop location.

Does it need a dust-collection system?

Proper dust collection is strongly recommended. The machine includes a dust hood designed to direct chips and sanding dust away from the workpiece, but it still needs to be connected to a suitable dust collector for effective operation.
