Chainsaws represent the ultimate in portable cutting power. They can help you cut down a large tree in minutes and cut logs into firewood in seconds.

Battery-operated chainsaws don't require gas to run, so you don't have to bother with refills. You do need a power source and an extension cord to use them, however. Cordless chainsaws run on battery power and benefit from the same easy starts as their corded counterparts with the portability of gas-powered models. Gas and battery-powered chainsaws each have their benefits depending on your needs. Gas chainsaws provide more power, speed, and longer run-time for commercial applications but are typically heavier. Battery-powered saws are usually smaller, but they make up for it with no exhaust and little noise, as well as virtually no maintenance. If you have trees on your property, a good chainsaw tool kit is as vital to your landscaping maintenance as as lawn mowers.

If you're working in the woods, take an extra chain and file in addition to your chainsaw. You want to be able to quickly get back to work if your chain snaps or goes dull instead of heading back into town. If you're running a cordless chainsaw, remember to charge your battery fully and bring along a spare to swap out when your charge runs low. Extra air filters and spark plugs ensure smoother operation if the filter gets clogged or you flood your chainsaw's engine. These machines feature high-performance motors, so make sure that you're mixing premium two-stroke oils for the best results, and be sure to use a reliable chain oil.

Wear appropriate safety equipment, like gloves, visors, and chaps to protect your body, and ensure you have been trained to use a chainsaw. If you have to take a limb off a tree and it's higher than you can reach on your feet, use a pole chainsaw instead of taking your chainsaw up a ladder. Alternatively, use a pruning saw to cut a small branch manually.

How Thick of a Branch Can a Pole Chainsaw Cut?

Pole chainsaws are for light-duty pruning, trimming, and cutting branches on tall trees. The bar length of your saw should be no longer than half the width of the widest tree or branch you're cutting. A pole chainsaw can handle up to 8-inch diameter branches with 8 to 10-inch bars. A full-sized chainsaw should be used to handle any branch larger than 12 inches. Whether you use a cordless, battery-operated, or gas-powered chainsaw, they make quick work of virtually any tree-based project. These outdoor power equipment and tools go with you wherever you need to work for exceptional job versatility.
