About Table Saws
What is a Table Saw?
A table saw is a large woodworking saw that cuts and rips pieces of wood. They utilize large circular blades and wide tables to make straight cuts in pieces of almost any size. Table saws offer some of the fastest cutting power of any power saws.
Choosing a Table Saw
Choosing a table saw can be tricky, but these few pointers and tips should help you whittle down some options, helping you find the best table saw.
Step #1: First, consider how and where you’ll be using your table saw. Knowing how often and intensely you’ll use your table saw can really narrow down the type of table saw you’ll need.
Step #2: That brings us to step two: choose a table saw category that best fits your needs. There are three different categories of table saws: portable or benchtop table saws, cabinet table saws, and contractor table saws. Keep reading for more info on each of these table saw categories.
Step #3: The third step is deciding which table saw features are most important to you. What fence type do you need? What miter gauge do you need? Do you require dust collection? How much power do you want your table saw to have? These are all questions you should be able to answer before you purchase a table saw.
Step #4: Research and research some more. Keep learning about table saws until you know exactly what you want!
Types of Table Saws
Portable Table Saws
Portable table saws bring quick, straight cutting performance to your jobsite. Portable table saws, often called portable saws or job site saws, are the smallest and lightest of all the types of table saws. Because of their size and versatility, portable table saws are most often used by DIYers who are making construction-type cuts, want easy portability and storage, but don’t need the power of a bigger, more industrial type of table saw.
Contractor Table Saw
Contractor table saws are the middle sized table saw- bigger than a portable table saw but smaller than a cabinet table saw. Most come with 1 – 2 horsepower motors that provide enough power for nearly all tasks. At 200 – 300 pounds, they feature heavy-duty parts that provide durability and accuracy. Contractor table saws are ideal for DIY-ers, professionals, and contractors. Most pros and contractors like contractor table saws because they offer more power and better capabilities than a portable table saw, but they are just as easily stored and transported from jobsite to jobsite so they save time and money by eliminated the need to bring large boards to a shop for ripping and cutting work.
Cabinet Table Saw
Simply put, cabinet table saws are heavy duty. They are powerful (typically 3 -5 horsepower) and highly accurate. However, cabinet table saws are pretty big (450-500 lbs to be exact), and they need a good amount of dedicated space. Their large size also means that these saws are not easily transported or moved. They generally stay in one place within a woodworking shop. These powerful table saws work 40 hours a week with little strain on their components, so they are best fit for industrial types of woodworking and production needs.
