Customer Reviews
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great compressor, I just wish it had a roll cage I purchased this compressor to replace my collection of underwhelming oil-free compressors. The compressor has been my daily user for the last 6 months, and overall, it's fantastic. I chose this compressor instead of Makita's comparable model because I wanted a quiet, easily portable compressor that is still rated for continuous duty. The short version of my review: the compressor performs pretty much exactly as stated in the specifications, but I wish it had a roll cage to protect it during transport. What I like about the compressor: - Compared to other compressors I've owned, including DeWalt's low dBA "ultimate trim compressor," this compressor operates very quietly. Both the pitch and the volume are low, so the perceived noise level is quiet enough that my daughter sleeps through it. - The compressor builds pressure quickly, and holds pressure without leaking. - I'm sure the compressor can get hot, but I've not yet experienced a situation where it did. - The compressor is great for nailing. In 6 months, I've never had to wait for the pressure to re-build while running a pin/brad/finish nailer, or had issues with nails not setting. It works really well with a single framing nailer or flooring nailer, also. - I occasionally run a HVLP sprayer with this compressor. It does the trick for small spraying tasks, but doesn't put out enough air to spray large cases. I don't consider this a strike against the compressor, since the stated CFM specifications are below the air requirements listed for my sprayer. - The continuous duty cycle lets me use a blow gun without breaks. It also works pretty well with an air drill for small holes, countersinking, and trim screws. - Overall construction quality appears to be excellent for a compressor in this size/price range. The gauges are easy to read and hold the settings well, drain plug does not bind/has not loosened, welds are clean, nothing rattles while it's running, etc. Neither good nor bad: - The compressor is no more or less awkward to carry than other twin-stack compressors. Generally-speaking, I'd say it's pretty comfortable to carry around. - It's easy to drain the oil, but I find the location of the fill plug requires a funnel to add oil without making a mess. Not really a big deal. Could be improved: - The first unit I received was broken during transit. The compressor was not well packed, and as a result, at some point during the shipment the gauges were broken, the plastic housing was cracked badly, and numerous fins/other castings were cracked or broken off. To Acme's credit, they immediately replaced the compressor, without hassle, and provided a return shipping label for the broken unit. While the second unit arrived in good condition, the broken unit served as a warning that care must be taken while transporting this model, as delicate components of the machine are exposed. I believe that Rolair could resolve this issue quite easily by incorporating a roll cage into the design, a la the pancake model. While I consider the unprotected components to be a design flaw in a tool intended for portability, and the only area in which Makita's twin stack compressor is superior, I did not mark the compressor down a star because I knowingly purchased this model despite the lack of a roll cage.
