The ROLAIR® 5-HP (230V 1-Ph), 15.3 CFM @ 175 PSI, Vertical 80 Gallon Compressor is a stationary unit designed to power high-pressure pneumatic tools in the workshop. With an output of 15.3 cubic-feet-per-minute (CFM) at 175 pounds-per-square-inch (PSI), you can power sanders, grinders, nail guns and more. This stationary air compressor is driven by a 5-horsepower motor operates on 230 volt single phase power. Thanks to a thermal reset overload protection feature, the motor will automatically shut down to prevent damage from overheating. The air reserve tank for this Rolair compressor boasts a superior storage capacity of 80 gallons. The tank's vertical design is even ergonomically beneficial since it takes up less space. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rolair & ACME Value The ROLAIR-V5180K28B-19 is an excellent value and comes with a magnetic start thermal protected 100% duty cycle Leeson motor (assembled in Mexico), a WEG (made in Brazil) motor control box and a Chinook PMP22K30CH compressor (made in Italy). The K30 has stainless steel Swedish lamellar reed valves on cast iron valve plates with a cast aluminum head, cast iron cylinder sleeves in a cast aluminum crankcase. Basically the compressor has the right materials in the right places. Ball bearings, oil sight glass 2/3 in bubble circle when stopped, goes to 1/3 when running. Unit was bolted on a pallet and was wrapped in plastic. Kudos to ACME free delivery. Arrived on semi, offloaded and put in place with fork attachments on my tractor bucket. Shipping label said 500lbs. I take one star off of ease of use for two reasons both related to the enclosed Rolair Manual: 1) Does not show electrical connections or requirements. 2) Does not show direction of rotation. Both of these issues are easily resolved but the manual does an overzealous job of, I'm sure lawyer required, safety and hazard stuff but "consult an electrician" for electrical connection and "look at flywheel" to check for correct rotation direction. Seriously, I don't mind the safety and hazard stuff and understand the need, quite sad and unfortunate how litigious the courts have allowed things to become, but if you have to go to that trouble then at least help the electricians out with a diagram in a slip sheet to the manual and this extract from the manual is flat incorrect for this model though it doesn't say so: "The motor must always be protected by a starter with properly sized thermal overload". The starter should protect the motor from overheating and burn-out due to an overload, low voltage or single phasing of a 3-phase circuit. Failure to install the proper starter and overloads will void the motor manufacturer’s warranty." Excuse me, it comes with a magnetic starter and that was installed at the factory, nothing else is needed except to connect the two single phase supply lines and ground. Also, I understand the manual is written for multiple models but since all the Chinook head torques are listed so could the rotation directions and although I don't know it, I would bet they are all the same direction. Regardless, the point is a simple slip sheet would suffice. So I feel two simple slip sheets given the amount of all the legal stuff should and could easily be included. Also, the sheet of paper trick in the manual is at best confusing and at worst wrong. "outside of the belt guard cover" can mean either the back side or front side. They mean the back side. The flywheel has an integral fan that will draw air in from the back #opposite the pressure gauge# and blow over the compressor cylinders. Now how hard would it have been to state it that way? And always a picture is worth a thousand words. And to my knowledge a single phase motor cannot rotate in the wrong direction #assuming the manufacturer built it right - decided myself to check cause who knows whats really going on in Mexico these days#, this should only be applicable to the three phase version and if I remember my motors class from 30 years ago, swap any two wires in three phase to get it to rotate the other way. Single phase, this isn't even applicable yet the manual doesn't say so. With that said, this is really nitpicky stuff and it took me all of 30s to figure each out. the manual does an excellent job at everything else, oil type, fill level, parts list, maintenance schedule, even the pipe diameter increase needed for remote locating the intake filter #where most the noise comes from#. 10 gauge romex for short runs #<50ft <24A# and 30A breaker if wire is contiguous and connections are solid will suffice though 8 gauge is better and recommended. As I had 10/2 on hand and I only needed 10 feet, I used that until I can replace with 8/2. I used a 40A breaker cause that's what I had on hand but if buying a new breaker, 30A would protect better. Start current is specified at 26 max and run current at 23 max. The WEG motor control box includes an overload relay. At the top of the contactor in the Weg control box you will see a red and a black wire in the L1 and L2 connection positions labeled as 1L1 and 3L2. This is where you can connect the two wires coming from the breaker box, white and black in a standard 10/2 or 8/2 romex. There are a couple screws holding a bracket in place you will see one green ground wire under one of the screws already. This is where you can connect the ground wire coming from the breaker box, bare copper in 10/2 or 8/2 romex. Leave the red and black wires where they are along with the feed lines coming from the breaker box. Be sure to use cable clamps in the breaker box knockout and Weg control box knockout, use bottom holes and leave 6" drip loops or enclose in metal conduit, solid or flex. Looking at the compressor from the front #side the pressure gauge is on#, the flywheel and motor rotate clockwise. Looking at the back #side opposite the pressure gauge#, the flywheel and motor rotate counter-clockwise. I don't have a sound meter to measure the compressor noise but I would call it very good, quieter than many 2-stages I have heard. And a good portion of the noise that is there is coming from the intake which can be remoted if noise is a concern. Important Notes: Change oil after 50 hour break-in. Use non-detergent single weight oil, table is in manual. Use shock isolation pads or mounts for the three feet, I use DiversiTech MP-4E E.V.A. Anti-Vibration Pad, 4" x 4" x 7/8" . Leave 18" between the back of the compressor #opposite pressure gauge# and wall. This is for adequate air flow to keep it cool and prevent premature failure. I cannot comment on Rolair service as I haven't had to use it yet, but I have heard it is good. I will try to upload pictures showing the major devices, county origins, electrical connections and compressor flywheel direction arrow located on the backside #opposite the compressor# of the flywheel.
