Powermatic Planers

POWERMATIC® planers are companion tools to Powermatic jointers that prep rough wood boards for subsequent woodworking projects by shaving their surface down to a precise thickness with a rotating cutter head. The planers handle stock between 15 and 22 inches wide, and the cutter heads consist either of a set of four straight-bladed knives or helical waves of four-way carbide knife inserts, ranging from 74 to 99, to 150 separate inserts. These planers operate with 3 or 5 hp motors with cutter head rotation speeds ranging from 4500 to 5000 rpm. They can shave rough stock down by a depth of between 3/32 and 1/8 of an inch. Powermatic planers are the first stage of the woodworking process, prepping wood for subsequent work with Powermatic saws, mortisers, shapers and sanders.

Powermatic electric planers are constructed from cast iron to provide plenty of stability for handling large stock accurately and safely. They have precision-ground, cast-iron tables, most with extension wings, for added control when feeding stock and boards. They have belt-driven cutter heads and chain-driven feed tables. All have two-speed gearboxes for feeding boards into the cutter head assembly at different rates depending on the density and roughness of material. Powermatic electric planers also feature solid-steel feed tables gliding on roller bearings, with serrations on the outfeed table to maintain the alignment of stock as it passes through the cutter head. Cutter head assemblies contain finger bars, chip breakers and pressure bars to minimize any kickback or snipe. Planer assemblies are essentially Powermatic benchtop planers mounted on cabinets, some with integrated, lockable casters for job site mobility.

Powermatic planers have all the features professionals expect for precision cutting, efficient operation and workplace safety. They complement the entire line of tools that give professionals the highest quality equipment necessary for all woodworking tasks. Choose Powermatic planers as the vital first step in ensuring that the stock you work with is the precise thickness and ready for its final finishing touch with a Powermatic sander.
